The Art of Leaving?

DD has recently begun to get upset when we leave places she would rather stay at longer.  Such as...the park / playground, or the store where we let her try out chairs for her big kid dinner table chair.  Basically, if she is having fun somewhere, she does not want to leave - and she will let you know it!

So, I'm trying to figure out how to get her to leave without throwing a tantrum.  She doesn't talk much, just some words here and there, so I'm not sure how much she could understand a "warning" before we are about to leave.  And I don't want to stop taking her to the park or letting her do things she enjoys, obviously!  Ideas?

TIA

  • You'd be surprised how much she probably understands.  Receptive language is often higher than spoken, at least until they start really speaking.  I've been giving DS "warnings" about things for months.  He caught on quickly and now is more

  • I agree that she probably would understand the warning.  My son is about the same age and he definitely understands.  He protests less when he is expecting something.

  • I'd try with the explanations too.

This is something I do with my kid a lot even though she's little and it really helps.

It has honestly really cut back on tantrums even though I feel like I'm talking to myself.

  • Ditto PPs, tell LO shortly ahead of time what you plan to do. Keep it simple and near to when you're preparing to leave but it helps them a lot. Kids understand way more language than they can speak at this age.

    While they don't understand time,

  • I echo the "warnings" and have been doing this for a few months.  We are just now hitting some tantrums and transitions between activities / places are the biggest source of frustration.  I find it helpful to say we are leaving / stopping AND wh
  • How much she talks is in no way indicative of how much she understands. Warnings are great for most kids, but do realize that they won't work perfectly the first time or anything like that. They are a pattern that your kid has to get used to, and you have

  • We have recently started giving DD a "heads up" about a lot of things, and it is working wonders!  She also doesn't say a lot of words yet, but she absolutely understands what I'm saying.  Letting her know that we will go once more down the s

Thanks everyone!  I'll give the "warnings" a try and see how they go!
