Making baby food

So I just started making purees for my LO. Previously we just bought jarred. So far I have made peas and sweet potatoes. The peas made him gag and he spit out the sweet potatoes. The consistancy is the same as the jarred food so what else could I be doing wrong? (He likes both of these in the jars...just not my version.) Suggestions?

TIA!

Re: Making baby food

  • Congrats on making your own!!  I make all of my babies' food.  Once you get the hang of it, it is really quite easy and satisying. :)

You are likely not doing anything wrong - it just tastes different.  Have you tried mixing them i

  • Did you steam or bake the sweet potatoes? I bake mine but tried steaming them today. The baked were sooo much better.

  • I steamed the peas and baked the sweet potato. In the end I mixed then both with something else and even then he barely ate them. I have also made carrots but I haven't given them to him yet. I guess it is something he is just going to have to get used to

  • As PP suggested, try mixing them or simply just don't give up. I couldn't believe my DS didn't like sweet potatoes, so I just kept trying until he did! I do think that the texture and flavor of homemade is different (even if only slightly) than jarred so

  • Add some cinnamon. I add cinnamon to anythign DD doesn't like and she loves it!
  • Hey - peas make my baby gag too. A couple of the foods she likes are:

    • green beans and spinach (about 2 parts beans, 1 part spinach)
    • sweet corn and sweet potato - (corn off the cob is a little j
