What do you do when your child throws a chair at you?

Not sure which screen name I used, but I wrote the post " I need help! "

My almost 6 year old defied every direction today.  At the park, he went up to high school kids and screamed in their faces and laughed. he came over to push his one year old sister in the swing and was too rough.  knowing he was wound up, i asked him to sit on a bench for two minutes.  he was rude and said no.  we left and i told him he would stay in his room until dad came home. He was sent to his room...he flipped out.  He kept running around the house yelling and screaming.  I then told him that he would stay up in his room the Rest of the night but could come down for dinner. To make a long story short, after dinner I sent him back up to his room.  DH went up to do reading with him and after 10 minutes ds did not want to read, but instead play a game,  Dh said that he would be leaving as he was in there to read. So, Dh left and ds proceeded to flip out.  This time, he was waking his sister and scaring his 4 year old brother.  Dh took the two little ones downstairs to occupy them so they were not witness to my sons breakdown. Ds runs downstairs, screams, cries, etc, then proceeds to throw a wooden play chair at the family.  ( which broke) He was so satisfied with him self.  Thinking he got the last word in, I went up to his room, got his " favorite" stuffed bird that he sleeps with ( favorite is used with sarcasm as every new thing he gets is a favorite.) and I asked him to please cutie up with scissors since he likes to destroy things. He laughed and thought it was funny but said that he would not cut it bc it was his. I then explained that since he likes to destroy stuff, then he can start to destroy his own stuff.  Thinking I was kidding, he made some sassy comments...so I cut his bird and its in the garbage,  well...this made him go into orbit. Oh the anger this boy has. He had no control.  He was flipping out, hitting himself, winding up to hit me.  I was actually thinking that since I have no where to turn for help. I would have to call the police to calm and talk to my child.

I put two emergency calls into his developmental behavioral pedi..one yesterday and one today.  She has yet to call back.

I have no idea what to do?  How do you calm a child that has no control over his own body, but clearly knows right from wrong.

Ds is on 50 mgs of Zoloft.  How does one wean a child off of Zoloft?  I really think its making my kids nuts.

Re: What do you do when your child throws a chair at you?

  • I think you are trying to do too much at this point. You are trying to teach him and you are trying to calm someone whose behavior is over the edge. Stop trying to teach him a lesson with the destruction of his stuff. You are not going to calm someone

  • I agree with you....My heart is broken that I cut his bird.  So no criticism there...it's reality.  I should never had done it.

I just wish I knew what to do next?  Are there techniques that I can apply for his next episode?

  • First and foremost, DO NOT stop or reduce his medication in any way without first being advised to do so by the doctor who prescribed it.  Suddenly stopping or incorrectly weaning off certain medications can lead to dire consequences, up to and in

  • I appreciate how difficult your situation must be, my son also acts similar to your DS at times and it isn't easy.

The only recommendation I can make to you right now is to focus on what you can do in terms of how you react to the situation.&nbsp
