holding food in his mouth

DS is doing this thing lately where he won't swallow his last bite of food. he holds it in his mouth or cheeks until its absolute mush and it ends up finally coming out of his mouth in the form of drool because he doesn't swallow at all. it's so gross and I don't want him running and playing with food in his mouth.

any recommendations on how to get him to stop doing this? when I see him do this , I immediately haul his butt to the sink and I'm literally digging in his mouth to make him spit it out. he'll squirrel it in there for a long time if you let him.

I don't think it's a taste or texture thing because he eats all of the food before hand. I thought maybe he was sick or had a sore throat but he seems ok and eats all his other food just fine.

ideas?

Re: holding food in his mouth

  • Have you tried giving him something to drink after his last bite? That way he has to swallow what's in his mouth?

  • yep, he just pushes the cup away and won't open his lips. plus I don't always know when he's going to do it. sometime he'll leave a bite or two on the plate when he does it and other times it's on the very last bite of food.

  • My babe did the same for about 2 wks. (from month 13 week 2 to 14 weeks)

    I think it will pass?

  • DD1 went through a phase like this, she was around 20-22 months, I think. I don't remember how long it lasted, but it was just a phase and eventually passed.

  • Ditto PPs, sounds like a phase. I'd just ignore it as best you can and let it pass. Sometimes when we make things a bigger deal, by trying to stop/change it, the kiddo decides to keep doing it because it gets a reaction.

  • DD used to do this too.  I would take a napkin and stick my finger in her mouth and dig it out myself.  After a few times of me doing this, she never did it again.  :-)
