Children's Benedryl??

Hi All,

My DD is 13mo old and over 20lbs.  This past week she has had not really a runny nose but lots of mucus build up (putting it nicely) :) and as soon as she goes to sleep she starts coughing her head off.  Thus, keeping me and her up all night fussing.  The funny thing is she does not cough any while she is awake.

I was wondering if giving her a small dose of children's benedryl at night would help the cough OR should i just wait it out and hope it clears up on its own??  I in no way would give it to her just to help her sleep, ONLY for the crazy cough!  I've never given it to her before.

Happy Spring,

Thanks!

I would strongly suggest you talk to a pedi first. That isn't recommended for kids that young.

  • We've given my son Zorbees honey cough medicine. It worked very well. It's all natural and kids 1 year and up can have it.
  • My 13 month old basically had the same thing last week, and our pedi said to give 1/2 teaspoon of children's Benadryl every 6 hours as needed to help dry DS up.  It didn't keep him up at all, but the box does say it can cause either drowsiness or exc

  • You should absolutely talk to your pedi.  I have given DD Benadryl once for severe allergic reaction to her antibiotics (which she took for an ear infection) and once for a raspy cough.

Both times I was advised to do so by her pediatr

  • Ask your pedi, like PPs said. We were told we could give her 1ml i think it was a while back for some stuffiness but that saline/baby vicks worked best. Also once for a bad cold with mucus, we were told to give her 1ml (again, I think) of the purple child

  • If she has a mucus build up I would not give a honey cough syrup. Syrup and mucus don't go together. I believe it is the sulfa in benedryl that can cause hyperness. My husband has this problem with anything with sulfa. I talked to our pharmacist and pedia
