Toddler bed transition going well!

DS was bed sharing and still does for about half of the night but I think we are starting to wake each other up too much.  So we took the front off the crib since he could climb out of it and I've been working on him sleeping on his own and the last week or so he has done better.  I usually rock him to sleep and still nurse him but he doesn't fall asleep nursing.

So what I have done is nurse him while rocking him then go lay him down awake and pat his back/hiney until he falls asleep.  At first he didn't like it and would cry some - no tears, just verbal noises and he finally quit but now it is so cute it sounds like he hums so I guess that's the way he will relax.

And the fact that daycare is transitioning him to a nap mat instead of crip naps helps because he is getting used to it.  I hope to get him to where I can just tuck him in but I know that is a way off.  But I feel like this is a great start!  I am so proud of him!  If he wakes up after I've been asleep awhile I just put him in bed with me but I figure it is a start and at least getting him acclimated will help a lot.

Just wanted to share my experience with anyone that is considering switching.  Oh, and so far he doesn't get out of bed he just cries so I don't think he realizes he can yet.

  • That sounds great, I'm glad it is working for you all.  Do you close his door so he can't roam the house when he realizes he can climb out and do you have the toddler bedrail up, I would be concerned that Skyler would fall out head first because her

  • Did you do any extra baby-proofing or preparation for when he can escape the crib?  I worry about the trouble B would get into once he figured out how to escape his crib.  Little stinker unplugs his monitor, too (seriously - where and how are yo

  • I need to order a rail but for now I put his anywhere chair we got him up next to his bed, but he doesn't move much so it isn't an issue.  At least if he tries to climb that he has a soft spot to climb on - the bed rails would put him up higher if

  • Wow! I'm glad it's going well but it seems extremely early to make this transition. Our pedi said it's usually done between 2 1/2 to 3 years old. He's always a little old fashioned, maybe people are making this switch sooner? What's everyone else doing? I

  • Toddler bed, potty training are as far off my radar as they can possibly be!  Ian doesn't not walk so I have no plans to even think about either of these issues for a LONG time!

  • We are nowhere near a toddler bed! But I'm glad you found something that works better for you!

  • I'm glad that's working for you! Eli still moves too much to consider it.  I'm thinking of starting the transition when baby #2 comes along (so at this point, he'll be 2 or older). I don't have any real reason, just a preference.

  • I didn't want to do a toddler bed so early - but he could climb out of his crib and I don't think the net things are safe.  He climbed out one day while I was in his room so I knew he could do it alone.  So that's why we are transitioning him no
