Letter to the police officers who found J

I procrastinated writing this because I knew it would be emotionally difficult, but it really needed to get done and I had some time at work today.  What do you think?

Dear (Officer 1) and (Officer 2),

We are writing to thank you for saving our son?s life.

Six years ago, you came upon a crying infant, and you saved his life.  From what we?ve been told, you heard a baby?s cry in a garden, investigated the scene, and found a newborn boy discarded {content removed}.  You picked him up, brought him to safety, and made a report of the incident.  And that may have seemed to be the end of it.

Except for that little baby, it was just the start.  Because you brought him to safety, he was able to get proper care.  He was named J, and examined by doctors who diagnosed him with pneumonia.  He was so sick that death was feared and he was quickly baptized, but miraculously, he survived.  If you hadn?t made sure that someone was looking out for him, he surely would not have made it passed those first days.

Almost four years later, in July of 2010, we met J while adopting our older son, M.  The boys were living together in the same orphanage, and even though our priority on that trip was M, J stole our hearts at the same time.  Shortly after we returned home, we decided to adopt J as well, and returned to make him our son last March.

J is our joy.  He is a very happy child, who loves to joke around and make people laugh.  He loves music and to dance, and beguiles all who meet him.  He is tender and sweet and absolutely adorable.  His favorite thing in the whole world is playing with his big brother, M, and they are best friends.  We cherish J, and are so blessed to have him in our family and to be able to call him our son.  We cherish him, and the happiness he has brought into our lives.

All this is possible because of you.  You saved our son?s life before we even knew he existed, or that he would become our son.  Because of you, he is thriving and loved, and our family is complete.  God led us to J when we went to adopt M.  We found both our children together, but none of it would have been possible if you hadn?t found J and taken him under your wings first.

Our hearts are overwhelmed with gratitude for what you did.  We cannot imagine what our lives would be like without J, and we owe our happiness to you.  More than that, we owe our son?s very life to you.  Words cannot adequately express this level of gratefulness, so we do our best by saying, ?Thank you for saving J?s life? and hope that you can understand what?s in our hearts.

                                                            With deepest gratitude and admiration,

  • That is a wonderful letter! I am sure that the officers will be glad to receive it. I think that officers in general do not get near enough praise for what they do and they will cherish this letter.
