Can your PT child wipe themselves?

I just found out today that now that DS has moved out of the toddler room at daycare he no longer receives any assistance in the potty. Including wiping after a #2. I was appalled. I haven't even started teaching him yet let alone expecting him to do it completely unsupervised.

Am I out of line thinking their expectations are too high?  Or should my 2 year old be wiping his own butt?

Re: Can your PT child wipe themselves?

  • My 3 year old can't wipe himself after a bowel movement, frankly I think his arms are too short. We've started trying to teach him though because that's the only reason he hasn't moved up to the next room, they won't help either.

  • Wow, I am surprised at that.  I don't know if I've ever heard of a 2 year old wiping themselves.

  • No way!  We wipe him.  Wouldn't have it any other way!

  • Thanks ladies! I didn't think I was overreacting but wanted a few other opinions. Looks like I will be speaking with someone at daycare today!

  • I never even thought to trust my three year old to wipe himself. I let him try a wipe but would never expect for him to get the whole job done independently, especially since his poops are soft since he eats lots of fiber. Odd to me for sure.

  • My 3yo can use the bathroom completely independently - wipe, wash hands, everything - but we still check her after BMs. 99% of the time she's good to go. This just started within the last 2-3 months, just before she turned 3, so I would not expect that a

  • We just started teaching him to do it and he does a pretty good job, but we almost always still follow up by wiping him ourselves, too. I definitely wouldn't expect 0 assistance to be the norm at 2!
  • Not well, no, but our DC teachers don't assist once they are PTed either. Sigh. Thankfully she mostly poops at home...I think it is a ridiculous expectation that my just over 2 year old should be able to effectively wipe herself.

  • DD can usually wipe herself for pee but we haven't even attempted trying to have her wipe for poop. I don't think she can reach far enough to get everything as she has some pretty loose poops still. I'm also worried that she won't wipe front to back. For

  • Yes he does wipe himself. After the first month or so of being PTed he didn't want anyone else to do it. He also washes his own hands, drys, etc. At first I always checked now I don't even know when he goes to the bathroom 1/2 the time at home. Until afte

  • My 3 year old (he's been PT'd about 6 months) just learned how to wipe himself within the last few weeks. I know my DS at that age wouldn't have been able to do it. I would think some assistance should be given.
  • DD1 can do everything herself, but wipe after a #2.

  • DS is in a kids day out once a week and we were just discussing this today. From what his teacher said after a certain age they are not allowed to have contact. She said if parents write a letter asking for assistance then they can help.
