Moving to Knoxville

Hi ladies! We're moving from Baltimore, MD to the Knoxville area at the end of March. I'm not familiar with Knoxville at all.

What part of town should we be looking at? DH's office will be right at 162 and I-75. We'd like a country setting and I'm just trying to get a feel of what areas are good for families.

TIA

Re: Moving to Knoxville

  • It depends on what your price point is and how much you'd like to spend on gas. Maryville is a nice country setting (I love it!!) and it is about a 30-40 minute drive to Kingston Pike depending on the hours it would be driven. I do this commute every day and it's not bad. If you want to be in a subdivision but want a pretty drive next to barns and a river to your house, then I know of subdivisions just like that in Farragut that I can tell you more about if you are interested. Very nice area and the best school system in the Knoxville area. Overall, you'll find the people in Knoxville very nice. I moved out here from California about a year ago and everyone is wonderful and this place is absolutely beautiful. Good luck!!

  • if you're moving to knoxville eastern knoxville is where they still have the country setting....if you're more wanting a surburban area west knoxville is the place to go. But most of knoxville itself is family oriented

  • Good luck on your move!  I have lived in Tennessee 30 of my 38 years... We currently live in Corryton.  It's a little off the beaten path of West Knoxville but we can be anywhere within 25 minutes..  We couldn't stand houses 8 feet apart so we moved to the country..

  • First, here is a website that has all the Knoxville area listings:

    https://public.kaarmls.com/default.asp?OfficeID=119&

We moved back to the area 2 years ago, and I found this website extremely helpful.  I would find a listing (or 20), and send them to my real estate agent to set up viewings for when I was in town.  It has all of the listed houses other than private party listings.

I have lived in the Knoxville area almost all my life. IMO- I disagree with PP.  I would not want to live in Maryville (too far of a commute and not much to do there) or East Knoxville (parts of East are really run down, and I feel beginning to get on the dangerous side as far as the mall over there).  Far East Knox does have country settings, but you will be pretty far from decent shopping and activities.

I would look in West Knox.  You don't have to go as far as Farragut (definitely the richest area) to find really nice homes with some land. There is a lot to do in West Knox as well.  You don't have to go far for a nice grocery store, movie theater, park, or safe mall. The schools are also good.

Oak Ridge is also a nice area (right outside of Knox Co.), and it has a lot of land.  The OR National Lab is there, so a lot of scientists live in the area. Their schools are in the top in the nation.  It's a 20 mile commute to downtown Knoxville.

If you go to the website I listed at the top, it gives a place to choose your location in Knoxville- These are the ones I would NOT click on: # 101, 103, 107, 115, 102.  In my opinion, those are the "bad" parts of town (less safe).  Over all, Knoxville is pretty safe, so some of the homes in those areas would probably be fine, but when I was looking, I avoided them.

    The areas I would make sure to check would be: # 118, 117, 120, 111, 122, 123, 121, 119, 124.

Hope this is helpful!  Good luck on your move!

  • I live in Maryville and it's country and really pretty. It has great school's too and not that far from Knoxville. My husband works in Knoxville and he wouldn't recommend raising a family there. Maryville is in Blount County. I love it!

I agree with all of this!!

H and I grew up near Knoxville but moved for his job. We moved back to Knoxville a year ago and we really like it. DS just started Kindergarten this year and so far I am very pleased with his school. Other parents seem to love it as well.

H works in East Knoxville and we did not want to live in that area. He commutes about 20 minutes to work.

  • I agree with Oak Ridge if you don't mind a little bit of a commute. Also try the Farragut area of Knoxville...very nice and not in the downtown hustle and bustle area!
  • I agree with PP's. I moved to Knoxville from TX last year and my husband grew up in Oak Ridge. We live in West Knoxville, off of Pellissippi Parkway, on 2 acres i.e.. no neighborhood. We are 10 minutes away from his parents in Oak Ridge and 10 minutes away from where we work on Kingston Pike. We're also really close to Turkey Creek and Cedar Bluff, both have shopping, groceries, etc. I would definitely recommend West Knox for young families. Good luck!
