SAHMs of one year olds....

What do you do with your one year during the day? I find it very hard to just sit on the floor & play for any more than about half hour. My son doesn't let me read to him without jerking the book out of my hand and rippig it to pieces! I don't like sitting in front of the TV all day. We live in MN and it's like 10 degrees here plus we have no car during the day. I am a new SAHM and I'm going a bit stir crazy! Any suggestions would be grand. Thank you!

Re: SAHMs of one year olds....

  • We also live in MN, but in the Lakeville area.  DS loves to sit and read, and look at flash cards.  We go out of the house just about every day, either to playdates or just running errands.  Do you know of any other SAHMs that you can get together with, maybe they can go over to your house for a playdate?
  • Loading the player...
  • We just moved to Red Wing so unfortunately I don't know anyone yet. Flashcards are a good idea, maybe I'll try that. Thanks for your reply!
  • Try joining a moms group, meetup.com, to meet other moms in your area!  Also, check out the public library, they usually have stuff to do with little kids (although I think it is usually during the day).
  • I am a SAHM and have gotten pretty good about staying busy. I go nuts all day!

The library is a big thing, we go 2-3 times a week for story/music time. They also have toys there. We have met several other mothers/kids there too that we get together with. We also go to the museum, Indoor play area, aquarium, etc.

If we are staying home, we read lots of books, play animal (haha, this is DS's word for a game when I chase him around the house pretending to be an animal)

Arts and crafts, play with pots and pans while mommy cooks. bake cookies,  Visit my neighbor who is in her 80's, have a dance party where I turn up the music really loud and we get the wiggles out.

We live in Cincinnati, so ssometimes eventhough it is too cold to go outside, we bundle up and play in the garage for a few minutes with the door shut. He plays with his cars, balls, etc in there for a  few minutes.

    GL!

  • I also wanted to add that it gets ALOT easier as he gets older. Jack understands so much more now that playing with him is so mucgh better. Give it a few months, it's a whole different game!
  • How about cloth or board books that he can't tear? ?There's a great Touchy-Feely book series...all the titles start with "That's Not My...". ?I ordered them from amazon.com. ?My kids STILL love theirs! ?For cloth, Peekaboo I Love You, & Busy Bee are favorites...I think I got them at BRU, but amazon probably has them too. ?Do you have music on during the day? ?I find that helps keep me upbeat (also sometimes when they act up & I feel like yelling, I just burst into song instead...hopefully it's slightly less traumatic for them!). ?Honestly though, I HAD to get out of the house every day just to feel sane, even if it was only a walk around the neighborhood. ?During the winter months, the mall was my home away from home. ?Any way you could have use of a car for even one day a week? ?Or hitch a ride w/someone? ?Also, mine loved a container filled w/small toys. ?They would sit in front of it & pull toys out, dump it out, put things back in, etc. ?It still can keep them occupied for awhile even now! ?A large metal mixing bowl (bonus is the bowl is really shiny & makes great noise) ?or a soft cloth storage bin are favorites. ?Mine also loved/love their ride-on cars (pushing it only at first, then riding on it when older).
  • You might check with your local public library for a Wee Read program, or if there is a university in your area you might check in their music department for a Kindermusik type class.  You mentioned that you do not have a car during the day, maybe one of the moms would car pool with you?!

We do Wee Read once a week and after Christmas we're adding Kindermusik.

When we are home throughout the day I like to offer DS some kind of art project (finger painting, coloring, etc) or more reading.  MY DS did exactly what you described about ripping the book out of your hands.  I started asking him to help me turn the pages and it has now become the best thing since sliced bread.

Also, if you are not opposed to television and by chance have DirecTV service, they offer a great educational channel called BabyFirst TV.  Throughout the day there are special programs like My Gym at Home and Baby DIY that are interactive.  You're not just sitting there.  It's fun!

Hang in there!  It DOES get better as they get older - like pp said!

  • OH, & I second that it gets MUCH easier & more fun in a few more months when he'll start interacting w/you more. ?
