homebirth...4-5 cm, 60% effaced for a week

I'm officially frustrated. I'm planning a homebirth and last week for about 3 days I had off and on contractions that were painful for hours each day. In the end, they all ended up stopping with the exception of an occasional half an hour or so here and there of odd ball contractions. I'm sooo exhausted with all of this but my midwife refuses to do anything as she says it will decrease the chances of a natural birth. This is my first home birth (although my fifth baby) and by now I was always in the hospital and they intervened by breaking my water etc. I'm trying hard to be patient but with 4 kids at home and DH not really having much more time off, I can't afford to have more false alarms. Plus, I started getting PUPPS on my tummy and am dealing with serious pelvic pains. Any suggestions to get this labor kicked in the tail as I'm absolutely miserable? I broke down and tried castor oil a few days ago to absolutely no avail except to being sick and stuck in the bathroom. I feel like I'll be pregnant forever unless I go to a hospital and don't want to do that as I really would like to deliver at home. I'm just getting really frustrated with my midwife for not helping me even by stripping my membranes or anything. Thoughts?...advice? Thanks!

It sounds like prodromal labor. Have you done anything to try to get the baby into optimal positioning? I suggest checking out spinningbabies.com for exercises to help you out. I'm surprised your midwife hasn't suggested positions to try already.

Your MW is right on. Letting things progress naturally is the best way to have a natural birth. I'm sorry you're so uncomfortable, but you're almost there.

Thanks ladies for all your suggestions. I'm looking into these options as we speak. We're short on cash right now so don't know if I'll be able to do too many alternative treatments but who knows! Good at least to know one's options. Thanks ag

Tylenol pm at night to help relieve some pain and allow you to get some rest. Getting a good nights sleep could help get labor started as well and either way will best prepare you for what's to come.
