Nitrate intolerance?

I have a FA daughter, but it's a friend who needs help and she has asked for my advice.

She thinks her son, who is almost 5, has a nitrate intolerance, or something. The way he explains his symptoms is about 6 hours after he has eaten a food with nitrates, he starts vomiting, and vomits on and off for about 36 hours. Then he feels very weak for another day and then is fine. No fever, diarrhea, and the rest of the family is fine. So probably not food poisoning or a virus as she first thought. She is getting an appointment with her pediatrician and a 'specialist' though I'm not sure what kind of specialist.

Of course she's stopped giving him the food with nitrates.

If any one has any ideas, I'll pass them along. I don't feel like much of a help because it doesn't sound like an allergy specifically. And my experience is based mostly on testing and then avoidance.

Thanks!

When you say food with nitrates what specifically do you mean? Pre packaged processed meats? Not a good food for kids anyways but if you have any more info I may be able to help.
