nursing with breast shield & pumping?

hi!

my son was born 2 months early and is now 2 months old...and just celebrated his zero birthday on my due date :)

We've been using a nipple shield to nurse for about a month a half now and he doesn't seem ready to take my breast without it. I've been nursing him, then supplementing a bottle of breastmilk fortified with extra calories (neosure) then pumping after each feeding because i'm scared about my milk supply using the shield. That said, I typically pump about 20-24oz a day in addition to nursing..and I'm SO SICK OF PUMPING!

any mama's out there using the shield and not pumping after each feed? has it affected your supply? my son doesn't seem to completely empty my breast...so do I need to keep the pumping up? My lactation consultant seems to think I can pump less but I don't want to lessen my supply. Any other's out there have any experience with this? Would love to just be able to nurse with the shield and pump like, 3-4 times a day...

thanks!!
