Preemies

RSV, NICU, and mastitis

Seriously. I don't mean for this to be a 'cry me a river' post but if it helps anyone its worth sharing.

I posted last week how my LO had upper respitory symptoms. I called the pedi phone nurse Sat and we followed her instructions. Late Sat night LO was having what we felt like were apena spells. Even though his nonbreathing periods were shorter than 20 seconds they were consistant. We rushed hin to our local ER where he was monitored. Even during these period his O2 saturation was good and they told us it was normal for small babies to have yhe episodes. Sunday he continued this pattern but was awake, alert and in good color. We were to see the Pedi Monday morning.

The pedi observed the episodes and again assured us his 02 saturation was good and we would just have to be diligent with the saline, suction, and elevating his head.

You need to know he never had fever...this is important. We were told over and over if he were in distress he would be desating and have fever. Specifically, it'd it were flu or rsv he would have fever. I try and try to convincie these docs this breathing was not normal.

Tuesday he was lethargic all day. I held him most of the day because I was afraid to put him down. I had to wake him to eat. Around 3 when dh and kids got home I looked at him and he was dusky. Almost blue. With stimulation he pinked up so we rushed 30 min away to the larger hospital er where or pedi rounds.

They immediedtly hooked him up to O2 and he pinked right up!

They ran lots of test but again the er pedi assured us the episodes are normal and he may not have a big issues since he had no fever.

WRONG.

His RSV test came back positive. The pedi changed her toon when she witnessed the apena episode first hand.

He was airlifted to our local Children's hospital. He has been very stable since being on O2. We spent one nught I. PiCU and then moved to the NICU. We are very thankful its a brand new hospital with a closed NICU where we can stay round the clock. They let us be very much a part of his care.

This morning I woke up and though man that sofa couch really made me sore. I thought that till I went to pump and noticed the red painful knots in my breast. Fever and the worst body aches imaginable followed. Thankfully advil and antibiotic are helping quickly.

I do not want to scare anyone but I just want to say follow your judgement. Dh and wish we had pitched more of a fit to get someone to listen to us!

Hopefully we will hang out and recover and then get back home. BTW...we never took him out other than to the LC and DR. We had a pretty vigorous washing routine and home.

Once we arrived here the neos told us only 30 percent of rsv presents without fever and only 20 percent presents with apena as a major symptom. We had both. St wants to ditch our pedi but I am not too sure yet.

Again, I hope this will help someone else to follow their intuition in situations like ours.
