Natural Birth

35 weeks, scheduled vbac, "low fluid"

This is not me but a friend:

She's been planning a vbac since day 1 and her doc has been fighting her on it since she first mentioned it.  The only reason her last baby was cs was because they discovered he was breech after her water broke.  We live in a small town, the hospital is NOT natural birth friendly, and they have tried everything they can to get her to schedule a cs.

The newest tactic is she supposedly has low fluid.  The thing I hate is, since they keep coming up with reasons she can't or shouldn't have a vbac we don't really have any proof that what they're saying is true.  I tried to talk her into getting a 2nd opinion at the mw practice  where I delivered but it's in a neighboring city and she's not feeling the drive at this point.

POINT! (Sorry) Does anyone have any ideas for increasing fluid?  Liek I said, there are doubts as to whether she's even as low as they say.  They're starting nst's next week, and if this birth follows suit hopefully she'll deliver around 38 wks anyway.  But they're saying if fluid doesn't increase they're going to schedule a cs.  I had OB's.  End of rant.

Thanks!

  • Drinking tons and tons of water.  And what do you mean by scheduled vbac?   Did they give her a number for the fluid level and why did they do an ultrasound at this point?

  • I've heard drinking LOTS of water, eating watery fruits, resting, lying on the left side a couple times a day and avoiding caffeine can help increase fluid. It's not guaranteed that that will fix it.

By a lot of water, I mean a gallon or t

  • Is she someone who would advocate for herself? This was a good article on low fluid, it would arm her with information that she may not be getting from her OB.

  • Honestly, I don't think any efforts are going to work if this is what they are using to get her to schedule a RCS.  I really don't understand why she stayed with this practice in the first place???

The standard guide for fluid intake is half your body weight in ounces.  Few people manage that.  Remind her to try.

Do you know what her fluid numbers are?

She's a VERY strong person and more than capable of advocating for herself. Like I said, though, the problem is they plant these seeds of doubt and

  • THis may be an unpopular response but ill put it out there.
From what you described, if I were in your friend's shoes I would be tempted to go with her ob's suggestion. The reason would be mostly in the fact that this practice and hospital seems unc
