Potty training story

S hasn't been asking to or showing interest in using the potty much lately, so I was excited when he wanted to try the big potty last night before bath. After he went successfully, DH and I praised him. I wanted to make a big deal, since we've been slow on the pt-ing front, so I bragged about him to his teddy bear, Baxter. I even brought Baxter into the  bathroom and I clapped his paws for LO. S was totally excited and smiled a lot.

So tonight, when LO used the potty again successfully, I said "Baxter is going to be so proud of you!" S smiled, and then immediately got up from the potty, ran naked into his bedroom to tell Baxter, who again clapped for him.

Making Baxter the bear the PTing praiser was either the most brilliant or the most flawed idea ever. I have a feeling that making Baxter clap and dance may get really old if it takes a long time to potty train!

Hah, I love when you stumble into those moments of parenting manipulation genius and then are tied down by your own brilliance.

  • Ha, ha!  I'm going to go with the most brilliant idea ever!  We're using stickers, but I also wonder when the excitement of stickers will wear off.

  • lol I know exactly what you mean!  J has been interested in the potty and we've been letting him use it for almost a year now, with no huge progress.  We started with stickers, and those became a huge event every time.  He took forever t

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • Glad I'm not alone on this :) Hopefully the novelty will wear off in a few weeks, but he'll still want to use the potty. It is kind-of cool, though, that this technique doesn't require that I remember to have M&Ms or stickers on hand at all times!

  • Ahh, that's so cute OP!  We were using mini m&ms (1 pee, 2 poop) and right at the same time we ran out of the minis, DS did some big PTing milestone (can't remember what now, ha ha!).  I was SO proud of him I told him I was going to give
