Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Teething

My little man is 14.5 weeks and has been teething for a couple weeks now. He's always a happy baby, but he's been getting increasingly irritable, chewing his fingers/hands/feet/arms like crazy, and making bucketloads of drool. I don't feel much going on with his gums and read that teething can go on for months before the first tooth erupts (please no!).

I got some Oragel the other day and that seems to help. I also got him a couple teethers with different textures and the ability to be frozen... first time I put a frozen teether in his mouth was hilarious. I got a VERY confused WTH?! look and then a few reluctant chews before he spit it out. He prefers his hands to any of the teethers, frozen or not. He will take his WubNub when I know he's not hungry but he needs to chew.

Sorry, long winded. My question/concern is that he has started to prefer the bottle to the boob over the last couple days. He still nurses straight from the tap with no problems at night (with less knawing since the Oragel was introduced), but during the day/evening he seems to much prefer the bottle. Not a problem because I pump at work and can pump at home too if that's what he wants. Is this typical? Do you think he is preferring it because the plastic is soothing to knaw on and/or the milk comes out easier?

I hope this passes soon and am glad that he is still a happy little man most of the time. Any other tips from moms that have been here before? TIA!

  • As a mom of 3 I think he likes the bottle during the day because his mind is so active and he can look around without missing out. As far as teething biting down on toys doesn't mean he's in pain. In fact, biting down will help bring his teeth in so unles
