Difference between Kindle and iPad? Suggestions wanted

I've been wanting a tablet and think these two are the best contenders but wanted input. I don't have an iPhone but H does - I'm an android girl myself so I was leaning towards the kindle but H seems interested in the Microsoft tablet - the surface I think?
