Natural Birth

Water Birth

I really want to attempt a water birth this time around, but my S/O has talked me out of it. His fear is that all the things released during labor and delivery (blood, poop, etc.) will be floating in the birth pool/tub and will get all over me and the baby.

So, anyone that has had a water birth, how can I alleviate his fears? Is it really going to look like a bloody, poopy pool by the time I'm finished. I know the water won't stop these things from happening, but he pictures something like a murder just occured in the water from how gross it will be.

Re: Water Birth

  • So, you are not allowed to utilize a wonderful pain relief technique because it might gross him out?  Wow, he sounds like a really supportive partner.

Personally, I would just do what is best for you and tell him to suck it up.  A

  • First of all tell you S/O to get over it!

Second, I know sometimes they use nets to scoop out the poop.  Like the kind they use to get fish out of fish tanks.  That might be an option.  I'm sure the water is not clear after baby co

  • I'm planning a water birth and initially I'd wondered the same thing but I saw some footage of water births and the water really didn't get gross at all. Plus I figure that the "gross stuff" would normally be stuck to me if I wasn't in water lol. The bab
  • Lol I have had three water births and have yet to have any extra floaties in the tub with me. Your midwife will use a net to grab anything nasty before it gets to far as well as grabbing the placenta. What little blood that does manage to come out will ve
  • Thanks everyone! I just watched 4 videos on youtube, and it seems a lot less messy than I expected. I am going to sit down with him tonight and try to get him to watch some. Hopefully that helps. I really want his support. At this time I can't afford

  • Once your baby is here, you or your H won't give a hoot what the water looks like! I promise.

  • I love that he thinks he has a choice in the matter. What's he going to say? "Hi honey, I know you've reached the pushing stage but *I* am not ok with this now so you best just get out of that tub so *I* am comfortable, 'kay?"

You could maybe compromise. My friend was in a small tub te got out to push. She labored in the tub till she felt like she had to push, got out, and within minutes baby popped out.

  • I agree with the PPs. It isn't like you are insisting that he be IN the tub with you. In that case, it is fine for him to say that he isn't comfortable doing that, but there's no reason for him to not be supportive of you wanting a water birth in general.

  • I had one last time, and will again this time.  I honestly didn't notice anything in the water, nor did my husband.  All we were focusing on was the new baby.  I have no clue how they cleaned it or what came out.  lol
  • Thank you all!! I wasn't able to login this weekend to update you all, but I have great news: Friday night we watched a bunch of youtube videos, and he now understands that a water birth is not as he predicted. Thankfully I have his support now. We eve

  • Birth is messy, period.

The water doesn't get that gross and they drain it pretty quickly.
