Postpartum Depression

Newbie ? - how do you know what's PPD and what's the "blues"

Sorry for such a newbie question ladies...I'm not even a lurker, but not sure where else to turn.

I had my second son 11 days ago -  he's awesome and fairly "easy" compared to some other babies!

I'm just struggling hard core with keeping my emotions in check...I cry a lot, but it's mostly about my toddlers behavior. I'm at my wits end and not sure how to handle him. I find I'd SOOO much rather just hang out with the baby and have my DH handle our two year old. He has way more patience than me :) I can't wait until it's naptime/bedtime so I can have a break from him.

So how long are the "blues" supposed to last? When did you know it was something more?

Thanks in advance!

  • The baby blues can last anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.  The crying, the short fuse with your toddler all sounds pretty natural baby blues to me.  Keep a watch on it though.  Talk to your doc/midwife about it at your 2 and 6 week PP visits. &nb

  • Sometimes it's hard to tell, especially when you're in the middle of it.

For me, I just had a gut feeling about it. I waited it out for about two weeks and I wasn't getting better ... I was getting worse. I just had this feeling like something wa

  • I had the blues but it sure felt like depression, which I've had before. Our midwife gave us this advice in determining whether it's baby blues or PPD in the early days: if taking a nap, eating a solid meal, having 15 minutes to yourself, and taking a sho
