OK ladies help me out here, sorry if it's long. We're trying to book our getaway to NY (my hometown) and points East in August, and DH and I are waffling. Here are our options:
Option #1: Fly out Wed. night (red-eye), return Tues. 12 days total. Airfare is cheaper, hotel and rental car would be more (due to added days). Also, I'd be using every drop of my vacation which would mean I couldn't use any vacation time between now and August.
Option #2: Fly out Fri. night (red-eye), return Tues. 10 days total. Airfare is more expensive, hotel and rental car are cheaper (due to less days). I'd also have enough vacation days to cover it, and even have one I could use before August (for, say, a 3-day weekend as a family). This trip would also mean one less lost wage day for DH at the restaurant (his night job).
When all is totaled up, we'd be paying about $200-$250 more out of pocket for option #2. But DH brings home about $100/night on Wed, so figure $100-$150 difference.
In that case, what option would you choose: longer time period for cheaper but no vacation time for anything else before then (and for probably a month after) or a shorter time period (which would give you a vacation day to use some other time before) but more expensive? We are divided, so I won't share my preference. I need an objective POV. (Hopefully my info didn't show which way I am leaning!)

Re: Travel plans: Thoughts?
I would personally pick option 2 and use the extra vacation day to stay home the day you are leaving and get everyone packed and organized. I almost always take a full day or a half day before the actual vacation starts so I can pack, clean
I would chose #2 or as mamaholmes2010 says
That way your hubbs will earn the extra money
I would rather have two "short" trips or at least one trip an the option of taking a day of during the summer ..
