Preemies

slow weight gain

DD was born at 35w4d. Thankfully she was born healthy and never needed the NICU. Our only issues have been with her weight gain. At birth she was 5lb 11oz and 18.5in long. At one month she was 6lb 11oz and 20.5in long. Well, the pedi wasn't happy with her weight and had us come back in 2 weeks for a weight check. At the next visit, she was up to 8lbs 4oz. She gained 25oz in 14 days! I was thrilled! Well, we went for her 2 month check up yesterday, and DD has lost 2oz and is now 8lb 2oz, but is 21.5in long now.

I guess I'm posting because I'm getting frustrated and I feel like a failure at BFing my preemie. We have struggled with this since day one and I just feel like we get ahead and then another set back.

Are there any other mom's of preemies out there with the same or similar situation with the weight gain? Is this something I should be very worried about, or is this pretty common? DD is the first BF'd preemie in our family so I really don't have anyone with firsthand experience to talk to. We do go to a BF support group every week and the LC there is helpful, but I just feel like this is a constant struggle and some days I just want to give up and switch to FF.

  • We are having similar issues as well with our FF baby. I know it can be frustrating. You're doing a great job with BFing. It's not an easy task with a preemie and all the milk suppy issues that are common.

  • Is this your first child?  I have three kids and all have been born a good size but then struggled to gain weight despite eating a ton.  DS3 was also born at 35+4 and is once again struggling to gain weight.  We have been adding a few bottl

  • Yes, she is my first. It's just frustrating more than anything. I feel all I'm doing is either nursing or pumping. She's happy and healthy and meeting milestones, so I'm not even sure why her pedi is making such a big deal about it. I'm maybe 5'2" and 115

My daughter was born at 26w2d and has always been either not on the growth charts or just barely on them.  Her pedi wasn't so much concerned that she wasn't on them (since they don't adjust for prematurity anymore) but wants her to follow her own

  • My DD was born at 35 weeks and weighed 5 lb 3 oz. She was gaining 2 oz a day the first month so I was super excited about that, but then she got reflux. She doesn't even gain 1 oz a day now. It's really frustrating seeing her spitting up so much, but she'
