Natural Birth

Scared of possible c-section

I'm 39 + 4 days. Was planning on vaginal birth but after seeing my doctor today, and having a cervical exam, she is worried my already large baby (head circumference is large) won't fit. She said my pelvis and cervix are a lot narrower then she'd like and he's still high.  She wants to do a more thorough exam on Monday to see where my baby and I are at.  I would like to avoid having an emergency c-section after a long and painful labor but I'm not crazy about scheduling one either. Any advice would be appreciated!!

  • I'm sorry to hear you're going through such a scary time. If you really want a vaginal birth I would say it's worth attempting. However, if you trust your doc and feel they are doing what's best for you and the little one, then I would do the safest optio

  • You can't know if baby will fit until you try. Even ACOG recommends against elective cesarean for big baby (unless the baby is suspected over 11 lbs.) Here's some information on CPD (baby who is too big): https://www.spinningbabies.com/baby-positions/cpd<b
  • Thanks guys! I think it's less about the baby being too big and more about me being too narrow and not progressing, but I'll definitely look at that site. Thanks again!
  • I think a lot of OBs fail to realize or remember that the baby and pelvis are dynamic and not static. Babies were designed to fit and make their way through the birth canal, and BOTH of those things move and change size during birth. The baby's head mo

  • Very, very few women have a pelvis that is too small for childbirth, and in virtually all confirmed cases, the problem is due to some sort of deformity or injury, like rickets or severe accidents that crushed the pelvis. Your pelvis will widen during labo

  • Agree with pp that it's unlikely that your body will produce a baby that is too big for you to birth.  Baby could just be high because s/he needs more time.

It I were in your situation, I'd decline the "more thorough exam" since it sounds li

  • It is totally normal to have a baby be "high" if you aren't even 40 weeks!

What everyone else said. It would be worth it to me to at least attempt labor then go straight to a c/s. Having a c/s after being in labor isn't fun, but at least you

  • PP have given you great advice.  Saying baby's head is too large to birth--no way to know that until you go through labor and the baby's head is presented to your pelvis and your pelvis and baby's head relax their shape.

  • I don't know specifics about your case but I do feel sometimes docs are "trigger happy" to do csections. This is why I say also that it kind of depends on the doc. But if you think about it, we've only been doing hospital births for less then a couple hun
