Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Pacifier weaning

Hello ladies,

So my Mom has been taking care of DS since I returned to work about 3 weeks ago.  Last night I was asking her what his schedule looks like for when he naps during the day...just to get an idea of how well he goes down for her.  Well she ended up telling "Oh he goes down great as soon as I give him the pacifier".  Now I am VERY thankful for her help and know I can't complain whatsoever, but I really didnt want him to get dependent on a pacifier to sleep during the day and now it looks like he is!  She was going to try it without a pacifier today and I just spoke to her and he finally fell asleep when she fed him his last bottle...but had been awake since 6:30AM because he wouldn't calm down without the pacifier!  Any suggestions on how I can wean him off of this?  I know he is young (little over 3 months) but I do not want to make an a huge ordeal later down the road and would rather get it over with now.  He is going to daycare in a couple of weeks as well and I really don't want him to use it there if possible.  Thanks!

Re: Pacifier weaning

  • Babies at 3 months still have the need to suck. It can help them soothe themselves, and it is healthy for them to suck.

  • I can understand, when I was a FTM I didn't want my kids to have them either.  However, when they went off to daycare, I gave them one for naps because I'd rather they soothe on that then be forced to CIO.  I only allowed them to have them for n

I took DS's away at 2 without a fight.  No big deal.  He only had it for sleep at that point but he was a great sleeper.

  • My children have never taken a pacifier, but my niece and nephews did and they were all weaned no problem, well there might have been a little fuss at first but nothing any parent complained to me about.  I agree that I think those horror stories are
  • I'm not going to repeat what pp have said but simply say I ditto them.

My son (3.5 months) uses a pacifier to sleep only, he doesn't look for it besides that.  I'm not concerned about it at all.  It helps soothe him.
