One & Done: Only child

City mouse or country mouse?

Do you guys live in the city or in the suburbs (or the country)?

Currently my husband and I live with L and our small dog in the city but are thinking about moving out to the suburbs when he begins school in a few years.  Taxes are expensive in the suburbs for this part of the country so we may just stay in the city and pay for private school since that would be about the same for one child as taxes.

Anything you like/dislike about having one child and living in either place?

  • We live in suburbia, but our backyard is a corn field. My family owns a dairy farm 30 min away and DH's family lives 45 min away in the country as well so we kind of have the best of both worlds.

  • DH and I are both very much city people, but right now we live in a small town. It's pretty much all white collar but only about 60,000 people and it's a three hour drive to anything bigger. Not as simple as a bedroom community.

I wish we lived in the city to be closer to work. The commute is really hard on all of us and the schools in our 'hood suck anyway, so as long as we have to do private I'd rather live in the city.

  • I'm in the suburbs and love it. Don't go into the city much at all and I'm about 20 miles from the city.
  • I live in a smaller city, about 40,000 people... We have a lot of things here, it's not necessary to go out of town TOO often, but there is a lot we don't have. There is a reasonable amount of shopping here, but no baby/toddler clothing stores, no Target
