Thoughts on Ryan for a boy

We love this name. A lot. But I'm worried that it is destined to go the way of Leslie or Kelly and become strictly for the girls eventually. Also, would the bastardizations like Rylan and Ryland (barf to both of those) bother you if you liked this name?

Re: Thoughts on Ryan for a boy

  • It makes me sad you even have to qualify "for a boy."  Ryan is a definite boy's name in my book.  People naming their daughters Ryan doesn't make it a girls' name, it makes them parents who have given their daughter a boy's name.

  • I don't really seeing Ryan going to the girls, I see it the same as Tyler and Kyle, a name occasionally used on girls but shouldn't be. I dislike Rylan/Ryland.

  • I knew a lady named Ryan a while ago. Her name is spelled Ryanne. I liked it. Different but not weird.

  • I love Ryan.  Hope it doesn't become a girls name.  Actually, I don't personally know one single girl who is a Ryan.

  • I grew up with so many boys named Ryan that it's hard for me to imagine anyone from my generation turning it into a girl's name.  My only issue with it is that it feels like it belongs to the 70s/80s, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, and I pre

  • I love it - one of my favorites! It also happens to be my husband's name, but I loved it long before I met him : ) I truly hope it doesn't go the way of Leslie, etc. I think it is awful for a girl! We don't want a "junior", otherwise I wouldn't hesitate t

  • I do not care for it for a girl, I prefer it for a boy. Although I can respect PP's reasoning for it. I think family connections work. I do not prefer unisex names typically though.

  • I think Ryan is a nice boy name.  I'm not sure if the recent usage of it for girls would scare me away from it or not.  I really do hate Rylan/Ryland also, but I think Ryan is the clear classy one compared to those two.

  • I really like Ryan for a boy and only a boy, and I don't think it will ever be more popular on a girl (and, FWIW, I am (shock!) not someone who hates masculine names on girls).  So, I think Ryan is safe.
  • Ryan for girls is not a new thing yet it's still stayed as mainly a boy's name. I think it's a great name. I wouldn't let Rylan/Ryland keep you from using it. Ryan is a classic.

  • Love, love, love Ryan. ONLY for a boy!
