Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8.5 month old not eating chunky foods

we started solids at 5.5 months, and he does really well with them, in fact sometimes hed rather eat purees then a bottle!

but he just wouldn't take chunky foods, anything with chunks he gags and throws up (and not just spits up-but throws up like ounces) Ive tried the puffs, hes still working on grabbing them, but when he does get one in his mount he chokes/throws up.  Ive tried cherioes, same thing.  Ive tried making more chunkier purees same thing, ive tried putting pieces of puffs in this his purees same thing.  He has chewed on crackers and those mum mumm things, and he does ok if his feeds himself, and hes gotten a few small crumb size pieces, but then once a bigger piece gets in there he throws up.

any suggestions? I tried to just work with him on it, but its getting to the point where im afraid hell be eating purees at high school graduation!

I am taking him to the dr for his 9 month appt next will and will ask about it then

Re: 8.5 month old not eating chunky foods

  • I do'n' have any advice but my almost 8 month old is doing the same thing. He loves the purees but won't do anything with chunks. He will dry heave and look at me like I am trying to poison him!
I keep offering him solid food at dinner to 'play' wi

  • My LO takes to all the foods well, so I have no advice but it sounds like this is something to as your pedi about. It seems like he needs to just adjust but for your peace of mind I would ask.

  • My LO will not eat chunky food either. I guess it just not their time. I think they will eventually come around. My best friend said her baby didn't like chunky foods at 9 months, but she kept offering them and suddenly one day he start eating chunky food
  • Just give him time. My LO was about 9 1/2 months before he started warming up to chunkier foods.

  • DD eats whatever I put in front of her so long as it's soft.  She will eat a few pieces of banana, breakfast potatoes (a friend of mine did this and she loved it), chocolate mousse (again, a friend and she loved it) even tiny pieces of peaches.</p

  • I wouldn't worry about it at all.  Like fine and gross motor skills, they all learn to eat at their own pace.  I've read they usually work on one skill at a time, so for your LO it may be fine or gross motor right now and eating will come lat
