summer shoes

I wanted to get DS a pair of keen's for summer (newport H2 style). He just started walking last month, and is really good at it, but I'm worried the Keen's sole will be to stiff. Thoughts?

He has a pair of size 4 shoes from stride rite right now that work great, but the sole is more flexible. I put a pair of size 4 slip on vans on him last night, and they wouldn't stay on & his feet would slip to the front so there was a gap between his heel & the heel of the shoe. I'm not sure if that's because they are too big yet or if it's just because they are slip ons. It seems Keens only come in size 4 or size 5. I'm pretty sure size 5 will be to big, but am worried he might outgrow the 4's.

I saw stride rite has similar shoes to the keens, but I'm not a fan of them (they all look to be leather - i was looking at something I could hose down/wash easily).

My son has a size 5 keens and he is fine in them. The sole is not as flexible as his stride rites, but they are still pretty flexible. His foot measures a size 4.5, and I'm worried he is going to out grow his keens mid summer. The size 6 for him would
