Babies: 3 - 6 Months

So what is the benefits of solids at 4m rather than 6m

From what I remember with my 2 DDs solids weren't introduced until 6 months.  Typically with some grain cereal.  But I was surprised when my Dr said that we could start at our 4 month appointment if I chose to do so.  I didnt think to get an answer to what (if any) benefit there was to start solids at 4 months rather than at 6.

He did tell me that there has been some research done to not avoid some of the more common "high allergen" food types as long as once recommended like eggs, strawberries and peanut/butter. But did not explain if there was any significant benefit or difference in waiting until 6 months to start solids at all.

DS is EBF and is right on target for growth, has occasional sleeps through the night (albeit random) so I'm really in no hurry to start.  Just wondered if anyone has any info on it.  Thanks.

  • I think it is just that it can be started at 4 months, if the child seems ready, not so much more beneficial. DD1 lost her tongue thrust, was able to sit up in a high chair, found interest in us when we ate, and was able to take to a spoon at 4.5 months s

  • My pedi told me starting them on cereal at 4 months was only to get them used to swallowing solids. I'll be waiting until 6 months too.

  • My son was ready at 4 months. He was sitting up, interested in us eating, and also downing 35oz of formula per day. Our pediatrician said when they start heavily drooling they are producing enough enzymes in saliva to break down food.

  • DD was very interested in food at 4 months ... Like very! With her it's a fight to get her to drink bottles ... Like I'm lucky to get 20 oz a day in her on a good day. Plus she has a milk allergy so that formula is even worse. So the doctor said to try so

  • There have been a few recent new studies that suggest starting solids between 4-6 months may reduce their risk of food allergies later on in life.  Based on these new findings, I decided to change my mind about waiting until 6 mont

  • There is no benefit, and your pediatrician shouldn't be recommending it. The AAP just came out with a practice statement that solids shouldn't be introduced until six months, and until then babies should eat only formula or breast milk. Their digestive tr
  • I'll start when she's ready, whether that's 4 mos or 7 mos.  I think DS was almost 5 mos.

I'm personally really sick of AAP suggestions taken as law by some mothers.  I wish people could learn to think for the
