Question about eating and concerns...

DS has always been on the low side of the charts when it comes to his weight. He?s usually 10-15%. Our pedi isn?t concerned because that is normal for him and he is healthy.

But I don?t understand how his weight is only 10-15% with how he eats. He is so skinny, you can see his ribs. Our pedi said he is just lean?

What do you guys think? Yesterday he ate more than me and DH. Today he?s been up for 3 hours and already he?s had a cup of milk, whole wheat toast with no butter, all of a banana, and an entire packet of oatmeal. (The oatmeal was mine?but he wanted some and that quickly turned in to all of it.)

Should I be concerned? He seems to be hungry all the time and whenever he sees any type of food he throws a tantrum until he gets some and then when it?s gone or he is done with a meal he screams and wants more.

How can he be hungry all the time, eat more than me, DH and my 5 year old stepdaughter, and still be so skinny? I?m just looking for insight to help me sort out what I want to ask the nurse line at our pedi?s office?I?m not sure what/how to ask if I should be concerned. We follow the nutrition guidelines, so he?s getting the right amount of food, but he?s acting like he?s not.

Re: Question about eating and concerns...

  • My DD is skinny too. She east all the time and she loves food. She is very active though, doesnt ever stop, unless she is going to take a nap or its bedtime.  Our Pedi said to feed DD until she stopped, somedays I think she is going to eat everything

  • I could be totally off base here but I started thinking about this yesterday. If an adult ate everything you described, fruit, oatmeal, wheat toast no butter, they would lose weight. So I'm not surprised that a baby wouldn't gain a lot of weight eating

  • Have you had his thyroid checked?  I know that thyroid issues can affect how your body metabolizes food and if he's constantly hungry...  I wouldn't be "too" concerned necessarily but may be worth having it checked.

  • Lucia is the same way. I would try and add more fat to his diet. With Lucia we put peanut butter on her toast, give her avocado all the time, use butter and olive oil. Fats are important for brain development. Along with toast or oatmeal in the mornin
