Toddlers: 24 Months+

3 year old milestones

HI, I don't post on this board much, but I am a bit concerned about my daughter. she will be 3 in mid June, but she can not count at all. she knows 1-2, but after that she just says random numbers and she will stick to her "Random order" for a few days then change it again. (1-2-679, or 1-2, 9, 11, 14 are both examples she says a lot) I have been working on counting for a very long time with her and I asked her daycare provider (who she has been going to for about 3 months now) and they work on it too.

Re: 3 year old milestones

  • As a Kindergarten teacher I'm not concerned.  DD has been at a Montessori preschool since age 2.  Although I'm not sure if they did any sort of counting in the toddler room now that she's in the preschool room she can count objects up to 10, som

  • Oh, and I wouldn't consider and call this a milestone.  Once you label it that way it makes parents even more stressed out.

  • I wouldn't worry at all. Huge range of strengths at this age.

  • Rote counting to 100 is still a first grade learning objective, so she's got years ahead of her of practice in school! My 2.5 year old still isn't pairing words; God knows he won't be counting at age 3! He's getting help, but the point is that they all

  • This makes me feel better! whatever source I read saying toddlers should be able to count to 10 and know their ABCs by age 3 must not be very credible. Plus, after posting this I did look it up on some other sites (checking where they were from this time)

  • My son will also be 3 in June and while he does count to like 15 or so and knows his ABC's, I never would have expected this, it's just something he picked up without us really pushing it.  I don't expect 3 yr olds to be able to do these things until
  • I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Rote memorization, is just that memorization. And from the sound of it, LO has numbers memorized just does not always say them all or in order. Memorization is good to have but just because a child can recite numbe

  • My DS turned 3 in January and just now has learned to count to 12. I would say there is a huge range of what 'normal' is. Counting has been very gradual for him and like PP said for a long time it was simply memorization. Only now (again, he's been 3 for
  • I would not be worried. Generally kids are going to do some things early, some things late, and other things in the average range. My son mastered counting early but only recently learned his abcs. If she was missing a number of age appropriate milestones

  • My DS (while he is not 3 for almost another 10 months) attempts to count but he usually misses number 6 completely and always says 5 again after he gets to 10. I really think it's normal. He definitely doesn't know his ABC's.

  • I can't stress this enough: they will learn it when they want to. My DD who now shows a talent in drawing, knows colors down to turquoise and fuschia, couldn't tell me where red was even after she turned 3. Her interest at 2 was nursery rhymes and she cou
