Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Question on night time bottle

What age was your child when you stopped giving the night-time bottle?  Our daughter will be two at the end of May and the night-time bottle (8-10 ounces of whole fat milk) is the only one she gets.  We recently moved the timing of the bottle to before teeth brushing and offer her a bottle of water for immediately prior to getting into bed.  I tried removing the bottle of water from the routine and she got quite upset so we're keeping it for now.

I hadn't given much thought to keeping the milk bottle as part of the routine for another couple months but lately I'm seeing a lot of comments where parents pulled the bottle from the routine anywhere from 12-15 months and substituting a sippy cup.  Is this really the norm?

Our daughter drinks lots of water from a straw cup during the day so I think stays well hydrated.  She won't drink milk from a straw cup (actually makes a gross face and practically gags when we try) so my concern has been that she will lose the fat-calories if we discontinue the milk bottle.

Any guidance on when you discontinued the night time bottle and how would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: Question on night time bottle

  • I don't know if it's the norm, but we stopped the nighttime bottle at 11.5 months when we switched from bottles/formula to wcm/sippies. He does drink a full sippy of milk after his bath, which he takes right after dinner. He was never very attac

  • We weaned him completely off bottles by 15m.  It took a while and we gradually worked him down to nothing from the bottle.  Have you tried milk in a regular cup?  She's old enough to be learning to drink from a regular cup.  Since she

  • Thanks!  Thought I would cover all bases by posting here too.  I saw your other comment and perhaps it is time to try a different cup altogether.
  • We ditched the last bottle at least two months ago...I really can't remember.

I have a couple of types of sippes I like - Playtex Coolsters (the ones that don't have a spout) and a Nuk sippy that has a very nipple-like spout. The Nuk ones were t

  • We stopped at 12 months when we switched our son to milk and sippy cups.
  • A very belated thank you to all for your input! We ended up going going cold turkey a couple days before her two-year old birthday. She cried a bit and needed some extra hugs but it all passed in a couple days. Success!
