Pregnant after 35

Our little girl came early!

This past Tuesday, I had my 38 week appointment and everything looked good.  I was 1 cm dilated and 80% effaced and we went ahead and scheduled an induction for next Monday, April 9th.  Later that afternoon, I went to my scheduled NST test and thought I would be out of there in 30 minutes like I usually am.  Instead, the minute the nurse hooked me up, she whips out her phone and next thing I knew, other nurses were coming in, oxygen mask put on, IV put in, and me wondering what the hell was going on!  Apparently baby's heart rate had dipped to the 90s for 3 minutes and she couldn't bring it back up with me just switching sides back and forth.  They were able to bring her heart rate back up and BPP looked good but my doctor said that was a sign, didn't want to take a chance, and scheduled my induction for that night.  Whoa!

I had already told my doctor I didn't want to be dilated with cytotec (after reading some crazy stuff about it) so were going for the foley bulb.  I had it inserted at 7 pm and by midnight the bulb fell out and I was 4 cm dilated.  The pitocin was administered and I got an epidural around 2 am which really helped me sleep through the night.  By 7 the next morning I could feel the pressure of the contractions increasing but no pain.  By 8, I was fully dilated and started pushing around 8:30.  And at 9:11 am, out popped our daughter, Emi Linh.  Her name is combination Japanese and Vietnamese and means 'beautiful blessing' and 'springtime' and she most certainly is our beautiful spring blessing.

She came out screaming and crying and pink which was all a good sign given her heart condition.  I got to hold her for about 5 minutes before they took her to the NICU and did an ultrasound and fetal echo.  Fortunately, my husband was able to go with her and stay with her but I was itching to get down there.  And we're very grateful that her heart condition is as mild as they thought.  She'll have some difficulties with feeding and sleeping that we'll have to keep an eye out for and will still need surgery at 4-6 months to repair her heart defect but it looks like at this point she'll only need one surgery.

Looking back, my whole labor and delivery experience was a lot more positive than I thought it would be.  Dare I say, it was almost zen-like. The only downside was that I had to wait 2-3 hours before I could go down to the NICU and see her so I didn't get to breastfeed within the first hour like I wanted to.  But since then, I've down in the NICU every 3 hours holding and loving on her and trying to breastfeed and pump.

So I just wanted to share my happy good news and wish all you ladies out there the very best with your pregnancy and delivery!  And to thank you for all your support as I was going through mine!! Hopefully the picture I posted of her will work!
