Midwife suggests wine during labor. Is this crazy?

My midwife suggested a glass of wine during early labor to help relax. She also said a single glass of wine with dinner is okay while breastfeeding? Is this true? Has anyone else heard this? I guess during labor, it is a little late to cause any birth defects, since the little peanut is already fully formed. I would still worry about my little one's young liver.

  • As long as it's a small glass (3oz), it won't hurt the baby, and yes, it's commonly recommended to help women relax in early labor. It can even knock out contractions entirely for a while. A word of caution, though: labor is often accompanied by nausea, s

  • That's a pretty common suggestion.  One glass of wine will not hurt your baby's liver.  And you can drink while breastfeeding.  The rule for that is that if you are safe to drive (e.g. one drink per hour), you are safe to breastfeed.

  • If I didn't drink while breastfeeding, I'd have gone 3 years without a drink. That sounds not very fun.

A bit of wine in early labour isn't going to hurt anything, but it's also a suggestion not a prescription. Do what makes you comfortable.&nbsp

  • I can definitely see the point in it. FTM's tend to get excited and busy when early labor starts (I know I certainly did!) and that's the exact opposite of what you should be doing. Yes, the wine can slow things down, but if it's true labor it's not going

  • Sounds good to me. I'm pretty used to midwifery care and non-mainstream ideas though.

In Ina May's book I think she says something about having a glass of wine when contractions first start.  The night my labor started, DH had a bottle open, so I thought I'd try some.  I had a few sips and it made me really sick to my stomach

  • Women take narcotics during labor.  I would think wine would be just fine.

At the end of this last pregnancy (when I was nearing two weeks past my due date) I was having a glass of wine at night before bed.  It's the only thing that wou

  • Not crazy at all. My midwife suggests the same. She said it's no worse than a shot of morphine in early labor to help mom relax.

  • It's absolutely fine if it will relax you. And in fact, one well known galactogogue (aid in producing milk) is dark beer like Guiness. It is frequently suggested for nursing mothers.

  • I've had the occasional glass of wine since 2nd tri so i am definitely not against it. In my mind, fermented grapes are probably far better than the chemicals and crap they put in food nowadays.

I may have to try wine when the contractions star
