breastmilk when out and about

When you are out, how do you heat up your breastmilk that was in the refrigerator? Do you leave it out and it gets warm? We are going on a two hour car trip tomorrow and were are bringing a few bottles of breatmilk, but I am really confused about how to heat it up. (I am not going to breastfeed in public. We are still not good at it.) Today I did not heat up the breastmilk enough and my son and a tummy ache most of the afternoon.

  • We haven't mastered feeding in public yet either. I usually just sit in my car somewhere in the back of the parking lot. When my husband takes the baby out with bottles he just lets them come to room temperature naturally. They are good for five hours out

  • You could see if he might be willing to take it cold. Some babies will. Otherwise, maybe you could just stop at a rest stop/restuarant and just run it under warm water.

  • For the next trip there are portable bottle warmers like the one below.  My LO fusses when I give her cold milk too.  I just let mine come to room temp unless I'm going to be gone for too long and have to bring a cooler.

  • I use the cup of hot water method at home, so think that's great for when you are out.

I absolutely encourage you to just go for it in terms BFing in public, though. You won't get good at it, comfortable with it, or used to it unless you sta
  • I would just give it room temperature.  I actually try to do that at home sometimes too if I'm doing a bottle just so my babies learn to take their bottle at varying temperatures.

  • When DD had bottles we would take it out of the fridge, run the hot water over it to get the fat off of the side of the bottle, swirl and feed. I didn't want people to have to warm it up for her so we never did.

  • When we go out for the day I usually leave 1-2 bottles out at room temp. and then keep the rest in a little cooler bag. Then I switch them out as we go through them. I also agree with the pp about giving some bottles at room temp. while at home. Enjoy you
  • I would try a hot water bottle in an insulated bag.

When we go on roadtrips, I just take by BF pillow with us and BF in the car. Is that a possibility? Might be easier than worrying about bottles (?)

We have one of those small thermoses that are meant for kids to take to school in their lunch bag/box.  I microwave some water so that it's really hot and then add it to the thermos.  I keep the bottle(s) cold in my insulated pocket of the diape
