Am I a pack rat?

Ok, I tried cleaning out my closet because I have a love for goodwill shopping and find myself buying tons of stuff with great intentions and never following through. I couldn't let go of anything hardly!

I also have lots of hair product that I NEVER use but can't get rid of it because I paid for it. And random items like a Rubik's cube, decorations from my moms house, kitchen appliances, etc, just sit around and take up space but I feel like I still want or need it!

We are in a very small one bedroom apartment and with all the baby stuff I feel suffocated. I just can't get past the idea that I could use it later or that I'll be so ticked off if I get rid of it and need it one day. Either that or it's things with sentimental value that I feel sad for tossing.

I've struggled financially so I get where the feeling is coming from but we're doing ok for the moment! I'm a little nervous that we will be broke again one day and I will have tossed something I'll need later.

Suggestions?

  • Here's the thing, you just don't have room for Shiit you don't use right now. You can't hang on to stuff you "might" need. If you rationalize that way then you'll be on Hoarders in no time.

I agree with pp, if you haven't used it in the past

  • I do the same thing sometimes. I've gotten better about just getting rid of stuff, though. 99% of the time I don't miss it. You don't have to throw it out, like PP said you can put it on Freecycle or donate what you can and someone will get use out of it.

Take small steps.  Fill up one box with things you think you should get rid of (say the hair products).  Tape it up and put it in the closet and date it for 3 months from now.  If you haven't broken the seal in 3 months, take it to goodw

  • I have no good advice for you as I'm a total hoarder. I save everything and my closet is full of size 2 clothes that are about 10 sizes too small for chubby-me.
