What does baby name board think of Doris

This is my grandma's name and in the past I always thought is was the uncool type of old lady name.

But as time goes on it is really growing on me with this artsy, individual but not overtly trying to hard to be unique vibe.

Thoughts?

  • I think of Doris Day, so it is akin to Audrey or Grace to me. Stylish, classy.  I think since it has a famous stylish namesake then it could make a comeback better than say, Lois.

  • Nms but I can see the appeal. Doris Day. And nickname Dory would be cute.

    Pretty hip.

All I think of is Rosie O Donnell's character in A League of Their Own. It just sounds clunky to me.

  • I think it's great! Especially since you have a family connection. And the NN Dory (or however you want to spell it) is super cute!

I understand where the clunky is coming from I used to think this too. But somehow it has now changed for me.

And I totally love the Dory nickname! Hadn't thought of that, grandma always goe

  • My grandma's name was Doris too! I also thought it was the uncool type of old lady name.

I think of a secretary, even though my grandma was a nurse.

I think it may come back in style as an "old but classy" name.

Eh, it's not horrible, but it's too old fashioned for my taste.
  • It's okay to me. I don't love it but certainly don't think it's bad. I like the family connection for you and think Dory or Dori is a cute nn.

  • Sorry, I think it sounds harsh and not at all feminine. Given the family connection though, I might consider it as a mn.

  • I can see the artsy, individual side.

It's my grandmother's name.  She's 92 (sharp as a tack) and often tells me she hates her name.  Since she was young she's wanted something more feminine. She goes by an unrelated nn (her name

  • Strongly dislike.
  • I like plenty of old fashioned names, but definitely not this one. It's a bit too much for me.
  • My uncle's mother was Doris, and she was in her 80s when I was a kid. She would always talk to me about how she wished her mother had named her Dorothy instead of Doris, saying how harsh Doris sounded in comparison. It's not a name for me, but if you have

  • Yuck, I think of it as an old lady kinda name, not a little girl name.
  • It really is a little old lady name.  It's cute though.

  • I don't think Doris has made the crossover into cool name territory like some other "old lady" names have.  I could see using it as a mn to honor your grandmother, but I personally would not use it as a fn.

  • Love it! :)

I notice some PPs have talked about knowing elderly Dorises who have said they didn't like that their name wasn't very soft or feminine.  My thought on that is that they were growing up with other girls who had very different nam

  • I knew a Doris in elementary school and remember thinking it was old fashioned. I don't think it would be out of place today though, with classmates named Hazel, Josephine, Pearl, etc.

  • My honest opinion? It reminds me of Dory from Finding Nemo. I met a girl named Doris once, and she fit the fish personality perfectly. She had a very short attention span, and while creative, was a little awkward to be around.

    But honestly, names
  • I'd use it as a middle name instead.

  • I would MN in honour of your grandmother, but it is too clunky/crusty for me to think of it as a first name option.

  • Great MN, I'm in the it feels clunky for a FN group. Though I feel like I should like it, because I love Dora and Dorothy. Maybe it's the League of Their Own usage which killed it for me.
