I just saw your post below about your trip to the eye doc.
DS1 started squinting at the tv back in the fall, so we took him to a pediatric ophthalmologist in Jan. He's nearsighted & needed glasses-- I've been really surprised at how well he's done with them, and his prescription isn't as strong as your son's. We started out asking him to wear them, but not pushing it. We bought some really cute books about wearing glasses. He took to them really quickly and even asks for them. Once he realized they were helping him see better, he wanted to wear them. He still "takes breaks" but for the most part he does great with them.
We had a follow up appt this week-- He did so much better this exam than he did at the first. His initial prescription was -1.5 in both eyes & our doc warned that we might need to tweek it a bit. After using he autorefractor on him at this appt, he measured a -4 in both eyes & his astigmatism in both eyes is on the border of moderate to severe. I didn't ask many questions at his appt (I read more about it when I got home), but I'm curious whether she measured incorrectly at the first appt (he was very uncooperative) or whether his vision has deteriorated that quickly over the past few months. I don't think that's common, but I know it's possible. (MrsJillian, can you weigh in?) Everything I've read says that his vision will get worse as he grows, until he hits his 20s. We have a follow up appt in 2 months.
We just ordered our 2nd pair of glasses with the new prescription (so we'll have the other pair as a backup) and should have them next week. It'll be interesting to see how he responds to the new lenses!
They recommended we go ahead and have DS2 tested-- he ended up being nearsighted too. The doc said that he'll need glasses by this time next year, but that she will wait a while to prescribe them. He's not squinting yet... and our oldest didn't start until after he turned two.So much of what a one year old does is still up close.
I hate that my boys will have to wear glasses, but I'm so glad that we found out early-- lots of kids don't get their glasses until elementary school because no one knew they were even having trouble.
Here's my 2.5 year old after his appt on Tues!
Re: {Alexandrap}
He refused to cooperate at the first appt at all. He started crossing his eyes a few months ago and that's why I brought him in.
I did not even think to ask if it could get better or not bu
I was really upset at first-- I felt like all people would see when they looked at my boys was glasses...but now that I'm used to seeing them on DS1, they've just become a part of them. People comment on them all of the time, but it's always been posit
We went with the absolute cheapest option we could-- the polycarbonate lenses with the anti-reflective coating were $50 at Target. I tried a few frames on him at some different shops in town, but the options were so limited in his size. I ended up orde
