Can I put multiple crib sheets on the crib mattress?

My mother-in-law insist that I put multiple fitted crib sheets on the mattress. She said to do this because if my baby has a blow out in the middle of the night, I can just remove one sheet and have another just under it. I don't know if this is safe. Or even if it would work. If she had a really nasty blow out, you would think I would have to remove the sheet under the top one. I have tried researching it, but I haven't found anything. Any ideas?

  • Makes no sense to me, I would think it would just soak through.

  • im sure as long as they were all on there tightly it would be safe...however, i'm pretty sure it would leak through to the other sheet. DD had awful acid reflux (so a lot of spitting up) and a few blow outs and they always leaked through the sheets to the

  • It could work if you put a mattress protector between too, but I would worry about the extra fluff in the bed at that point. You'll deal with MOTN blowouts when they happen. I think my kids rarely blew out through diaper, clothes and swaddles. They wet th

  • I don't think it would effect safety so much as it wouldn't work. If, however, under one sheet you put one of the hospital chucks that would stop leakage. We used those under our first born for almost everything to avoid messes. You can buy them at the st

  • I have heard several people say they layer a mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet, etc. Your MIL's advice makes since if that's what she meant. It is a hassle to change sheets in the middle of the night. I don't think there is any hazard in doing that

That's silly. You'd just end up with two dirty sheets instead of one. Newborn poop is super watery and will soak right through.

And I see it being just as much of a hassle to pull one sheet off as it would be to change a sheet; mattresses fit

  • Yeah just layering sheets won't help anything and mattress pad covers that most people think of would be too bulky. But they make like 2 foot by 3 foot ish pads that are all purpose and decently thin for protecting various things. I always use them in the

  • I'd suggest having 2 mattress protectors (and a min of 2 sheets) so that when one set gets dirty you can still use the back-up set to protect the crib mattress while the 1st set is in the wash.

Like, unless you have saran wrap between the sheets

"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL
  • Buy buy baby sells sheets that snap on. They come with straps that go around the rails on the crib that the sheet literally snaps into. Best invention ever!

  • I have heard of this before, so your mom isn't completely crazy. It would have to be sheet/waterproof/sheet/waterproof, though.

Maybe if she brings it up again, point out the soaking-through-two-sheets issue and aske her to clarify what she means

  • I have heard that too, but like a PP said, I would think it would soak through. We got this:

I honestly don't see any point to any of this. All the layering and special pads and special sheets and whatnot; seems like a whole lot of discussion over nothing.

  • My advice to all new mothers is to put a sheet down, waterproof protector, and then another sheet. When a leak happens in the middle of the night, it makes it a whole lot easier to take the top sheet and protector off and have the crib ready to go.
