DS mostly feeds himself. Our dog learned a long time ago hanging out by the high chair is a great place to be. It's great because he cleans up the messes, but DS thinks it's hysterical to feed his food to the dog. He's a big boy so I'm not too worried about him not getting enough, but he's really starting to throw most of his food. He also doesn't like to be fed and usually grabs and just plays with the fork or spoon so I try to usually give him stuff he can eat by himself.
I spend enough energy trying to get through a meal with my 3 year old, and the dog as been around long enough that I"m not going to try to keep him away from us while we eat. Do you think if DS starts throwing food I should just take him out? Is he too young to understand? Any other suggestions?

Re: LO feeding the dog
I think he's too young to understand. We had the same problem. Two things that helped were completely ignoring it (DS thinks it's funny when we get mad or frustrated which is a whole other problem) and having the dog sit just a little furth
We had this problem for about a week when LO started going through the phase where he wants to share his food with everyone. I know you said you don't want to try to keep the dog away, but this problem was completely solved for us when I gated off
