Before Christmas we asked our lawyer in Peru if he could help us find M's first mom and the police officers who initially found J after he was abandoned at birth. I received an e-mail late last night saying he did just that!
He was able to meet with one of them, and after a little while, the officer became less apprehensive and began sharing details. The officer remembers the day when they found J very well, and said that they called him "Lolito" after the chief officer (whose name was Lolo).
The two officers no longer work together, but our lawyer will get together with both of them soon, to thank them for us, get pictures (and maybe video) of them, and ask them what they remember of that day. We're hoping that if they worked that area regularly, maybe they'll have an idea who his birth family might be. Either way, we're just thrilled we can thank them.
I'm going to write a letter to them, expressing our gratitude. These men saved our son's life before he was our son. There is no expression to adequately describe how we feel towards the people who literally saved our child. We hope that one day we will be able to thank them in person, but for now, a simple letter that I will no doubt agonize over writing this weekend, and some e-mailed pictures of our happy son and family, will have to do.
