C-sections

General vs Spinal for scheduled c/s

For those who have had either BOTH types of anesthesia or at least the general anesthesia, which did you prefer and why? Can you tell me about the risks and benefits of the general that you either encountered or were told of?

Re: General vs Spinal for scheduled c/s

  • I had general anesthesia for a different surgery, not for my c-section.

It took me a long time to feel normal after the surgery was over. It was a longer surgery than the c-section, so that makes a difference. I felt horribly groggy and loopy for

  • I had the spinal for the c section and general for another procedure. Wayyyy prefer the spinal. It's great to be awake, and I really had no after effects except for a little shaking for about an hour. Coming to from the general anesthesia wasn't a good ti

  • I had an epi for my first c/s (unscheduled after 24 hours of labor) and that kinda sucked because I started to feel things after a while and they pushed another drug to keep me calm.

Spinal for my RCS, that was fine, painful to get but no prob

  • I had a spinal with a scheduled c-section, and also had general anesthesia immediately following a vaginal birth due to a retained placenta.  With the spinal I did have the shaking and was so cold, but then also so hot from the heat lamps the

  • I've had three c-sections, three spinals, with my last one being a failed attempt in a semi-emergent situation that resulted in being put under with general.  I would definitely NOT want general if I had the choice and I think they only use genera

  • You don't want general unless it isn't an option to have otherwise. You will be "under" and unconscious for a while, and even after you are awake, you will not remember things for a bit. You will be groggy and "cloudy" feeling, and the risks are much,

  • Just popping over... I had a general.  It was awful because I did not experience any of ds's first breaths, cries, etc.  I was also alone as Dh couldn't be there.  I did not have a choice to get this for my c and would never pick it.

  • You have enough to worry about with your current health problems; don't spend your time worrying about this. If you have a choice in this matter, just get a spinal. You don't want general anesthesia if you can help it.

  • I was under general for my c-section, and would have 100000000% rather have been awake.  It was an emergent issue (DS had a low HR and my BP was so low I was in and out of consciousness) so I didn't have a choice.

  • Typically, if there isn't a medical reason to give you general then they wont put you under.  It carries too many risks to you and the baby.  They typically put someone under for a medical reason or in case of emergent situation when they d
  • ds#1 was an emergency c-section under general...it was horrible on so many levels.  I missed my baby being born.

I had a spinal with ds#2 and it was amazing.
