Very picky name question

We would like to use Josephine as a potential mn to honor a family member, but we'd also like to have a name that ties in with family's French heritage. So according to behindthename, Josephine is actually English/German, and the French version has an accent over the e. I speak fairly fluent French and I understand that the pronunciation changes a bit from each name but I guess I'm not sure which one to use since we'd pronounce it the way Americans would, but I still would feel better knowing we had the legit, French version.

(trust me, I get that I am totally overthinking this)

Another option would be to use Josette as a mn.

  • As far as I know, Social Security does not recognize accent marks. Not sure about individual states/municipalities. So you can use the accent if it is important to you, but I don't think it will be included in her official documents/SSA card/birth certifi

  • Another vote for Josette -- I think it more clearly honors your French heritage.  And is adorable!

  • This is totally dumb rationale, but I always think of Josephine as being French because of Josephine Baker since she was so famous in France.

I would prefer Josephine over Josette and would use the accent marks in situations when you can I guess

  • I think Josette is a beautiful name, but if Josephine has a significance then use that. I would add the accent but just keep in mind that it will probably be dropped off on most documents.
