September 2013 Moms

tell me about bottles

I'm planning on breast feeding 90% of the time, but should I have some troubles, or cannot for whatever reason (date night?) I'd like to have some bottle around.  I've already decided I'm going to register for the manual Medela breast pump, since we cannot afford an expensive electric one.

So I went searching for bottles.  I like that the Dr. Brown's are glass, but ultimately was going to register for The Philips Avent Natural 4oz bottles (3 pack) and the Vital baby Natural 5oz bottles (3 pack).

My mom thinks I should find some bottles that convert into those baby sippy cup things.

Any bottle recs given our situation?  (maybe some that fit well with the medela, or convert into these different drinking stages for baby/toddler?)

Re: tell me about bottles

  • The best advice I ever received about bottles was to start with cheap bottles and work your way up from there if they don't work for your baby. We started with Gerber bottles, which are like $4 for a 3 pack. They worked great for DS and they screwed right

  • My favorite are BornFree bottles. They don't turn into sippy cups though. But they don't leak and Avent leaks pretty bad. I have a toddler in my class who has the sippy cups who leak (not awful, but still leaky) and then some babies have them and the bott

  • I am a FTM too, and I have started thinking about bottles as well (I will Bf but I'm going back to work so I am hoping to get my little boy adjusted to bottles as well the breast).  I talked to a lot of my friends and each child has different bottle

We only used bottles occasionally. I opted for Dr. Browns because I wanted glass and they screwed onto my pump. I hear people get annoyed with cleaning all the parts, but we had to do it so little that it was a non issue.

  • I will hopefully be BF'ing this baby but will pump occasionally for DH or DS to be able to feed the baby. I also bought the Avent Natural (2 pack) and the Tommee Tippee (3 pack) bottles, all in 9 oz. I looked at a lot of the bottles one day at BRU and

Thanks for the input so far ladies.  My cousin who just had a baby swears by her Medela swing, and suggested I look for one on kijiji (which is like a Canadian Craig's list).  she says there are a LOT on there for like $60 with accessories.</

  • I mostly breastfeed but we needed bottles for daycare. I used the Playtex Ventair Wide bottles. DD did great with them. As we switched to formula we needed bigger bottles so I liked the NUK brand because they had extra room. When it came time for sippy cu

  • I just posted in the pumping post above, but I'll post it here too! My medela hand pump was my favorite pumping method! I got the most milk, it was more comfortable than my electric, it was convenient....

We had the vente air bottles. Really

  • I never got the hang of pumping and nursing with my first LO. So, I ended up only BFing for the first 4 months before having to go back to work full time. :( So, not much advice on pumps. But, before my first LO was born I purchased SEVERAL Dr. Brown bott

  • Bottles, like pacis, will depend on your LO, so I wouldn't spend a ton out of the gate. For DS, Playtext Ventaire Wide bottles were perfect. He went from slow to fast flow, never needing medium. DD did not take the Playtex, and preferred the much smaller

  • Don't open and wash a bunch. Get a couple, make sure you and baby like them and then stock up. I hated all the parts of the Dr Browns so we may e going with different ones next time

  • I had to supplement with formula and my LO did great with the tommee tippee bottles. I loved them. You can get inserts to hold breast milk or measured formula. Never had a problem with leaking and super easy to clean.
  • A lot is going to depend on your baby and his/her preference. I would start with dr browns and Avent.
