Special Needs

Small issue but I needed perspective

First I feel weird even posting here but thought you ladies could give me perspective. I am extremely lucky that both of my kids are healthy and developing fine. DS is excelling at school and is honestly academically advanced. He does this weird thing when he talks and when he reads though where often he just does not get a good breath and gasps on the middle of a word or sentence and then continues. He is generally unaware although I feel partially bad that I am working in him with it and worry that this will make him selfconscience although it needs to be worked on. He is only in Kindergarten and his teacher mentioned it to me not as a major concern but that she noticed it and wanted to know if I knew why. She offered to have him evaluated for speech and is exaggerating how it affects him so someone can see him and maybe they can give insight. I got the paperwork today and it hits me that there is first a meeting to see if they even should evaluate him and if it would be for special Ed or speech only. Now I secondguessing having my child that is reading very advance and and doing math advanced and I am having him evaluated. In the meantime I am going to bring him to the pediatrician to rule out asthma or other ENT issues causing it. I am not sure what I am looking for here or if I am just venting but any words would be appreciated even if it is negative!

  • This post makes no sense to me. A kid can have a speech issue regardless of how intelligent they are. It's not like if he needs some special education that they're going to move him to a classroom with a group of children who are intellectually disable

  • Auntie. Thanks! This just furthers my need to have him tested and follow up with doctors. I am going to start with the pedi but have wanted to see an allergist anyway for his apparent cat allergy plus seasonal and there have been times when they thought

  • As a mother of a special needs child I also am a tad confused by your post.  My son is also incredibly smart but has a significant speech delay and SPD. Just because he has two "special needs" doesn't mean he isn't just as intelligent and possibly
