I am a Penn Stater and no we never referred to it as Penn. Penn was UPenn and Penn State is Penn State or PSU. I will say that a lot of outsiders confuse it though. I can't separate Penn from the University and wouldn't use the name.
Interesting comments! I hadn't even made the Pennsylvania connection... for the record, I'm not really considering this myself, but was curious what the board's thoughts on it were.
I LOVE it, but it's definitely a name that some people are going to find unusual... you might get a hard time. I think it's a reallly cute name, though. It reminds me of Penn Badgley (actor).

I had a friend in HS who went by Penn, short for Pennsota. He is Vietnamese American so I always assumed it was a Vietnamese name. So to me it seems perfectly normal.
