My newly 1 year old has taken to dropping at least half her food on the floor to the dogs, or directly hand feeding them. She also now refuses to be spoon fed, though she like to hold (and drop) the spoon herself. We say no and make disappointed faces, but she gets so much positive reinforcement from the dogs, and we originally laughed rather than taking it seriously. She just looks right at us and giggles and drops more food.
What discipline works at this age? We want to continue to offer her a variety of finger food, but I'm getting tired of this stage. Bonus points if you can also advise me on getting her not to try to throw herself off the changing table during diaper changes.
Re: Dropping food to the dogs
Dropping food onto the floor (or to the dog) are big no-no's in our household.
DD's first offense would get a warning/reminder of the correct behavior ("You may not drop food on the floor/feed the dog. Leave it on your tray or give it to me
Both kids went through this phase. DD at 3.5 years old no longer does it since we're about to reason with her and explain that people food is not for dogs. When DS started doing it we did the same thing we did with DD. Anytime we saw
We lock the dogs in the kitchen to help DS focus during mealtimes. Then we call them in afterwards so they can clean up any messes DS left behind. When the dogs aren't under the table the motivation to drop stuff isn't there.
Our dog is trained to stay out of the kitchen during meals. No temptation for the kids or the dogs.
We had the same two issues around the time DD turned 1. Our dogs were never fed human food and they have turned into quite the beggars because DD loved to throw them food. While part of me was irked, a friend pointed out how much of a bond
