Nuchal Fold 6mm at 13 Weeks... HELP!

I made, what I consider a huge mistake, by getting the Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound. We have no family history of chromosomal issues... Yet, I wanted to see my baby again, so I went to have it done. The next day I get a call at 8AM saying for me to come in because they did not get clear measurments. I knew something was not right. I went in they started again, this time the doctor was there too, not just the tech. The doctor tells me that the baby should have a nuchal fold of no more than 3mm and my baby has 6mm. He wanted me to speak with the Genetic Counselor. After about an hour, I decided to do the CVS test... the fun needle that goes through your tummy. I am waiting on the results.... I feel that knowledge is power so if my baby has Down?s, Turners, Trisomy #, or a heart defect that I would want to know now. Does anyone have any insight... Can ANY good news come from this?!  I get the preliminary results in a few hours...

  • I removed the word... however, look up any reseach and "mental retardation" is a MEDICAL TERM. Clearly, you are the one with out knowledge. Thank you for posting something rude during my difficult time.

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with your choice of wording, and am so sorry you are going through this! I had a blood screen done last week and got a call Tuesday that my baby has an increased risk of Trisomy 18, so we now are going Monday to see a
  • Unfortunately, the CVS test is just as invasive as the Amnio. I am only 13 weeks so the CVS test would be the only test they can do without waiting until 16 weeks for the amnio. Its almost the same procedure except the needle goes to the amniotic fluid

  • Did they tell you what your odds were? without that, I can't say if any good will come of it (but then again, the odds may come from your next test)

That is actually why I avoided these tests.

  • Good to know about the CVS test. I will be 17w5d when we see the specialist so they will first do a level 2 u/s and then we can determine whether or not we would like an amnio after that. I have already has 2 miscarriages prior to this pregnancy so would
  • I only just had the blood work part done, so I guess they decided not to give me odds yet. Basically, I am 28 yrs old, first child, no family history of any chromosomal issues or heart defects. He said since what we are looking for is all genet

  • In OPs defense, mental retardation is a clinical term and is associated with a positive NT screen. She was right to use it.

  • I am sorry to hear that. Both are invasive. The amnio at 18+ weeks has very low miscarriage risk, of course, speak with the dr, there is always a risk. BUT  here is my opinion, and ONLY my opinion... and I wish I followed this myself from d

  • Yes, we wouldn't termite in any case, either, so most of the time I think anything beyond a level 2 u/s isn't necessary, except I do agree with you that knowledge is power. Let me know what your results are. I think it's a good thing that your initial tes

  • This is so aggravating.  The NT test is known for giving higher odds for problems and worrying people.  I had a great measurement with my first and the bloodwork came back with a higher chance than normal.  I forget the percentages.&nbsp
