The post below got me thinking, if someone gives your kid money as a gift, be it Christmas/Birthday/Christening, etc. What do you do with it? We always put it into a college account even if it's just like $10 or something, we figure the kids don't need anything and it's better saved for their future. Not sure what we will do when they get old enough to want to spend it, maybe do half? What do you do?

It depends. We always try to honor the wishes of the gift giver. If the gift giver specifies that they want it to go into savings (DH's grandma usually does) then we put it in their savings account that they will have access to at some point in the fut

It depends on the amount--usually 10 and under go into her piggy bank. Everything over goes into her savings account.
Typically my daughter seems to get gift cards instead of money though--except for my parents--who give money for her college acc
Depends who it's from and whether they give any indication what they want done with it. I know my gma would like to see it spent on something for A. My mom gives her a pretty substantial gift of money at xmas but I know it's for her education savings.

We put it in his 529. However, most people do gift cards so it hasn't been much of an issue.
I'm not sure what to do when he gets old enough to want it. I know parents who matched funds deposited in a savings account, so maybe we'll try something

It goes into savings. Doesn't matter if it's $5 or $50. She's already got a good savings account built up, it will be her money for books/incidentals in college.
I will continue to do so as long as she's a minor. My parents did that for me and

Right now it goes completely into her college fund.
My parents used to let us spend some and put the rest in savings. (You know, when we were old enough to care.) They determined what the split was.
