One & Done: Only child

Do you think having only one child makes you more hyper about their safety?

We only want one kid, but I am wondering if I'll be overly hyper and caring about the child's safety and where they go and with whom since I only have one....

  • I think it depends alot more on the kind of person you are over how many kids you have. Sure you can have more and maybe not have time to worry, but I bet you still would. My husband and MIL are really cautious with him and my mom and I are much more i

  • I don't necessarily think so.  I think that's more of your own (in general- not you specifically) personality. I know some women with only children who are not overly protective or anything, and I know some with 3+ kids that are really, really pro

  • I actually think I'd be more hyper about it if I had more than one because I would have more to focus on.

  • I'm definitely hyper about DD's safety.  To the point where I know people say I'm overprotective.  I'm not sure of the reason though.  Maybe it's because DD is an only child, maybe it's because we went through alot to get her here, or ma

  • I think I am hyper aware (although I do not consider myself overly so) not because of having one child but instead because of growing up with a police chief father.  I think I was made aware, very early on, of the things one should be cautious abo

  • I don't think it has for me. But I'm mostly laid back about minor childhood scrapes and bruises.

I mean, I'm pretty vigilant about car seat safety and such, but I don't think that would change even if I had 12.

  • I think it comes down to the fact that I'll always be a FTM. As such, everything is new and crazy for me.

People tend to relax a bit with their second (and third, fourth, etc.) kids because they have a little more experience.

  • As PP's have mentioned, that depends on you. I don't plan on being that way because I worry it would be detrimental to my child.

You have a choice in the way you behave. Simply choose not to act that way.

  • Oh the situations my mind can conjure up... So far, her falling or getting a scrape doesn't bother me as much as worrying about all the creeps and weirdos out there. Or worrying about her becoming a drug addict or a stripper. This typically happens

  • I think I'd be the same? My siblings call me the safety police. I'm ok with it!

  • I don't think people are more protective of one child vs. more than one. However, I think people with more than one are a little bit more relaxed about minor things because they realize after the first that children really aren't that fragile.

  • This question is weird for me. What I'd play it fast and loose with my kids if I had two because I have a spare in case something happens to one of them?
